On July 3, 2010, Serena Williams surpassed tennis phenom Billie Jean King to become the sixth most winning’est’ female tennis player ever in the world.

With her fourth Wimbledon trophy plate in hand and #1 world ranking, she is seemingly unstoppable. In fact she and her sister, Venus, have won nine of the last 11 Wimbledon titles in addition to several other Grand Slam and Olympic titles.

Off the court, Serena is the founder of a school for girls in Kenya, Africa, and the creator of her very own clothing line, Aneres – Serena spelled backwards.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/TDHfSXT6RtI/AAAAAAAAAMU/joFJMNcGvtA/s320/Serena+W10.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5490414927329511122" />

The LA Times reported soon after the match that Williams overpowered Russia's Vera Zvonareva, 6-3, 6-2. There was almost nothing Vera Zvonareva didn't find difficult about Williams on Saturday, a pummeling that took only 67 minutes on Centre Court in the Wimbledon final. She had spoken early in the tournament about feeling that her game wasn't sharp.

Zvonareva never got a single break point against Williams, who served 89 aces for the tournament, 59 more than anyone else. She had only nine aces Saturday, but the Williams serve kept Zvonareva flat-footed and off-balance.

Williams got the first service break of the match in the eighth game with a brilliant forehand passing shot after Zvonareva had struck a confident volley.That single point, which the Russian had played smartly and aggressively, seemed to deflate Zvonareva, playing in her first Grand Slam event final.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/TDHiKYDrglI/AAAAAAAAAMk/oHUbln70z1o/s320/Serena+W10a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5490418088625799762" />

In her post-match interview, Serena stated that she would like to be remembered for the work she does off the court rather than the number of titles she's received playing tennis.

Our 1st Lady: 2010 NAACP Keynote Speaker

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 232px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/TCuLseZRMRI/AAAAAAAAAL8/s-zbCAMlNmc/s320/MO+NAACP2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5488634167070634258" />

In addition to serving as the First Lady, Michelle Obama is also an amazing public speaker! She will address members and supporters of the NAACP in Kansas City, Missouri on Monday July 12, 2010 in Kansas City, Missouri. As a part of her Let’s Move campaign, the First Lady will discuss the necessary steps to combat childhood obesity and her efforts to create a healthier generation of kids.

Although childhood obesity is widely labeled as a national epidemic and the increasing rates have been a problem for decades, little efforts have been put forth to address the issue. As a Cheerleading Coach and advocate for healthy eating, I am very happy to see the First Lady bring this issue to the table. When asked to speak about childhood obesity during her visit to the Larry King Live show, Mrs. Obama stated that 1 in 4 African-American children are clinically obese. This is a problem that has solutions and I am honored that the First Lady will address the topic at the NAACP National Convention.

“We are elated to have First Lady Michelle Obama joining us to celebrate our 101st year,” said NAACP President Benjamin Todd Jealous. “Providing affordable health care coverage and ensuring the well-being of all Americans is a priority for both the NAACP and the Obama Administration. Michele Obama’s visionary leadership in confronting the problem of child hood obesity is to be applauded.

This year marks the NAACP’s 101th National Convention and as many of you may know, the organization celebrated its 100th anniversary this past year. If you are a Kansas City resident, I strongly encourage you to attend the convention. And as an active member of the NAACP, I encourage everyone to join! The NAACP is very supportive and continues to serve our communities after 100 successful years of service. More than two years after President Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation, the order read by Major General Gordon Granger made plain that the relationship between “former masters and slaves” would now be one of ‘employer and free laborer.’

Yes, you read correctly. The slaves of Galveston, Texas did not learn of their freedom until two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, which was completed on January 1, 1863. During this time, there was little access to news and thus the slaves of Galveston were unaware of the President’s orders to end slavery.

A history teacher in Southeast Washington, D.C., I love teaching my students about the ways Blacks escaped from slavery and more importantly, how they can use the information gained in class to help combat current slave mentalities. A supporter of Juneteenth education and celebrations, I am very excited to see that our President, along with members of Congress, are continuing to acknowledge the legacy of the Juneteenth holiday. In fact, all but 14 of the 50 United States, recognizes the day as a state holiday. It is up to us to ensure that the remaining 14 follow suit.

Because just as our president stated, “….our nation is stronger because of the generations of struggles for equal rights and social justice, and our culture is richer because of the contributions of African Americans throughout our history. This is why Juneteenth, while rooted in the history of a people, can be celebrated by all Americans.” Please visit http://www.juneteenth.com/history.htm or http://www.nationaljuneteenth.com to learn more about the esteemed holiday so that you too can become an educator of history.

Michelle Obama Speaks to Anacostia Grads

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 208px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/TCoWVXBUN4I/AAAAAAAAALk/mLJ4kcSjuQ0/s320/MO+and+Jordan.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5488223652116969346" />
Accompanied with a graceful smile, First Lady Michelle Obama graced the stage of Constitutional Hall on Friday June 11, 2010 to deliver the 2010 Anacostia Senior High School commencement address. In a beautiful baby blue dress and shiny pearls, the First lady reminisced on her childhood and upbringing in the Southside of Chicago as she encouraged the students, parents, grand-parents, guardians, and all others in attendance with her beautiful words. The following is a short excerpt of the First Lady's address:

"We are living proof for you that with the right support, it doesn't matter what circumstances you were born into, or how much money you have, or what color your skin is, if you're committed -- if you are committed to doing what it takes, anything is possible. It's up to you. (Applause.)

So, I know the journey you've traveled may not have been easy. I know many of you have faced more than your fair share of hardships and adversities. I know you may be worried about what the future holds. But you have to understand that there are a lot of people out there who believe in you.

I believe in you. The President of the United States of America believes in you. (Applause.) When times are hard for us, you inspire us. You keep us going. And we are expecting big things from you in the years to come. Big things! We are counting on you to be the very best people that you can be. We're expecting you to show the same perseverance, the same caring, the same spirit that made it possible for you to be here today. We're expecting you to show the same commitment to a better life that has always made this country great."
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 285px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/TCoXmcJo5sI/AAAAAAAAALs/HeOcvupyV6U/s320/Ana+Graduation1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5488225045063460546" />
As Anacostia's 2009-2010 Teacher of the Year, I cannot imagine having a better first year teaching experience. General Bill Halter in a close 52% to 48% win (98% of precincts reported). Lincoln has been criticized by many during this campaign cycle concerning her stance on the health care bill but pulled through when in the end. Receiving nearly 10,000 more votes votes than her opponent, Lincoln was ecstatic to accept the Democratic nomination following the announcement.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/TA8XezGvDZI/AAAAAAAAALU/zpBmpx2wXEA/s320/Joyce+and+Blanche.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5480625089415155090" />

Arkansas State Senator, Joyce Elliott, has been named the District 2 Democratic candidate after winning a very close race 54% to 46% (100% precincts reported). Not only did First Lady Michelle Obama grace the audience with an amazing speech, several students accomplished their goal of receiving a diploma in honor of their hard work and the work done by those who came before them. The First Lady's speech offered much hope not only to the graduates but also to members of the audience struggles with day-to-day ups and downs. I am so thrilled and so honored to be here today to help celebrate the extraordinary young men and women of the Class of 2010.

Thank you, Chancellor Davis, for that very kind introduction, and for continuing your family tradition of inspired leadership at this university.

I also want to recognize Governor Mike Beebe and Mrs. Ginger Beebe, Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor, Representative Mike Ross, Attorney General Dustin McDaniel and Mayor Carl Redus.

Thanks also to Carl L. Johnson, Vice Chairman of the University of Arkansas Board of Trustees, the members of the Board of Trustees and B. Alan Sugg, President of the University of Arkansas System.

And graduates, let's all take a moment to thank the unsung heroes here today - your families: the folks who pushed you and believed in you, the folks who answered all those late night phone calls, even when you were just calling to ask for money, the folks whose love sustains you every single day.

Because today is their day too. So let's give them a round of applause.

Finally, to the stars of today's show, the class of 2010 - congratulations, we are all so proud of you.

You've worked so hard and invested so much of yourselves.

----

I think that Dr. Dorothy Height - the godmother of the civil rights movement whose recent passing we mourn - put it best.

When discussing why she kept up the fight for civil and economic rights all throughout her life, she said, simply, "This is my life's work. It is not a job."

And that is what I wish for all of you graduates today.

I wish for you the kind of trials that help you discover your life's work and give you the strength and faith to pursue it.

I wish for you a life lived not in response to the doubts or fears or desires of others, but in pursuit of passions, hopes and dreams that are your very own.

And whenever you get discouraged - and you will, when you start to lose heart and you want to give up - and you will, I want you to think about all those who came before you.

I want you to tell yourself that if Quiana Childress can go from being homeless to graduating with the highest GPA not just in the biology department, but in the entire School of Arts and Sciences then surely, you can overcome whatever adversity you face in your own life.

Tell yourself, if Dr. Samuel Kountz could appeal directly to this university's President and insist that he deserved a place at this school, then surely you can see to it that your own gifts never go to waste.

And if those seven students could have the audacity to take their place here 135 years ago, if they could insist on fulfilling their God-given potential and staking their claim on the promise of this great nation, then surely, all of you can too.

May their legacy be your inspiration.

And I wish you Godspeed and every blessing on the road ahead. Thank you.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THTn0n-gZP4

Congratulations to UAPB's Class of 2010! I can't believe it's been almost 8 months! While my love for teaching and determination to create endless opportunities for my students has been such a pleasure, now is the time to express the heartfelt excitement! Several exciting things have been occurring at Anacostia and I'm so happy to share them with you all.

White House Mentoring Program
Four Anacostia students to the Obama mentoring program. This amazing program has allowed our students to meet some of the administrations most powerful and influential including the President and First Lady. They has also had the opportunity to meet Supreme Court Justices, actors/actresses, and many members of
Obama's administration.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 210px; height: 210px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/S6ZlCvEnOkI/AAAAAAAAAK8/JX_2OFmSB-4/s320/ASHSc.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5451155496648522306" />

Anacostia Students selected for Top Positions
Two Anacostia students were also selected to serve as MC at the infamous White House Easter Egg hunt. The two young ladies are ecstatic and more than deserving of the honor. Two Anacostia SHS students were also selected to serve on Chancellor Rhee's High School cabinet.

Internships and Jobs
Several juniors and seniors have recently interviewed and selected to participate in Mayor Fenty's Emerging Leaders program, a program that will allow them to work this summer and give back to their community.

Sports
The Anacostia Cheerleading squad recently finished first place in the DCIAA Senior High Novice Division of the championships that were held at Coolidge Senior School in NW DC. All 11 young ladies worked tirelessly to accomplish the feat and are very deserving of the award. In addition to being amazing athletes, over 80% of the team members were named members of the Honor Roll and 5 of the 11 members are also members of the Lady Indians Basketball teams. All 11 members of the squad are currently members of either the Track, Softball, or Tennis teams.

As you can see, there are a lot of great things going on at Anacostia. With the support of parents, teachers, staff, administration, and other stakeholders, we will continue to make our school a great learning environment for our illustrious studnets!

Go Indians!

March Madness 2010!!!

It's that time of the year again! His Story. Lies My Teacher Told Me. Great book. . .one that everyone should read. I remember reading about the various types of high school history text books (primarily American history) and how some publishing companies actually produced different versions for schools in the North as opposed to the South. Shocked? I was too.

Ironically - well probably not - both versions tend to provide way too little information about the history of Africans in America a.k.a. African-American history. While studying the 'history of social studies education' in graduate school, I was amazed to find out that less substantive information is being taught as the years go by. And as many of us may already know, Black History Month more relevant now than ever before,for several reasons.

Many people say that we need to study history in order to prevent past atrocities from re-occurring yet we fail to right the wrongs year after year. I promised myself on my birthday this past Monday that I would no longer be a hypocrite. I would no longer preach to my friends, colleagues, and family that it's important to study history when I, in fact, had stopped 'expanding my knowledge' after I finished graduate school. The time to right our wrongs is now. So what will you do?

Instead of purchasing songs on itunes, visit half.com and purchase a book for .75. It'll probably be brand new too! Volunteer at an elementary school one afternoon a week. You could read a Black History book to elementary students or even middle and high school students for that matter. (I read to a 1st grader while interning on Capitol Hill and it was one of the best experiences of my life.) Join Big Brothers and Big Sisters or even educate your friends with a Black History fact each day.

Whatever it is, do something. If we don't pass on the legacy and stories of our ancestors, who will? Who's going to love you and your story more than you?

Obama's 1st State of the Union

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/S2RZtLDtOdI/AAAAAAAAAJ8/ovEEtU097lw/s320/Obama+State+of+the+Union.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5432565683112982994" />

It was 9:00pm and I found myself sitting the Eisenhower building watching President Obama's first State of the Union address, reminiscing on the entire election and his first year in office. Still in shock, I just gazed at the faces in the crowd, wondering if they were thinking the same thing I was thinking, "wow, he really won." I wonder if I'll still feel this way next year or the year after and possibly in five years if he is re-elected.
What I admire more than anything else about the Obamas is that they re-iterate the fact that change will not come overnight. It is a long process that, if we work together, could possibly come before we know it. In addition, change is defined by individuals in several ways. While some may view change as the creation of 1 million jobs in one week, others may view changes as the fixing of an old bridge or the signing of the Anti-Hate Crime bill.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/S2RXolNnyqI/AAAAAAAAAJ0/GpFIypbX1z4/s400/SOTU.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5432563405211290274" />

Obama hit just about every topic one can think of in this year's address: Health Care, Education, International Affairs, Energy Conservation, Jobs, etc. He surfaced issues that many past President's would have elected to omit such as the soured relationship between the Blues and Reds. And he even spotlighted the amazing job Michelle and Jill are doing - and they really are doing a lot. Obama is right. Until we put our differences aside to make this country great, future generations are destined to suffer the repercussions of our actions.

He made us laugh, cry, think, internalize data, and smile. One of the best speeches ever? I'd said yes but of course I'm only 23 so I've only heard a few State of the Unions. Whether you like him or not, you must admit that he laid out the facts and gave solid solutions for combating many of the tough issues we're facing right now as a country. So in effort to make 2010 a great, let us start supporting our great nation and President one day at a time.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/S2RZzfE0HcI/AAAAAAAAAKE/wsE40q4bkyg/s320/State+of+the+Union.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5432565791565553090" />

When 3 Miles Seems a World Away

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/SyBfCUl8vVI/AAAAAAAAAJE/XedTJBuEolQ/s320/ANA!+099.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413431245591592274" />

On November 17th and 23rd respectfully, I became - yet again - one of the happiest teachers in the world. On those days, I was informed of my student's acceptance into the Obama Administration's White House Mentoring Program. Two female and two male students from The Academies at Anacostia were selected to participate in a program that many would LOVE to be a part of.

PRICELESS. The look on my students faces when they became aware of their selection into the program. Surprises have popped up left and right since their acceptance. The White House provided our school with 5 reserved section tickets and the administration asked me to take the four mentees. Of course I agreed and we all had a blast. "I never thought I would be able to do something like this." Those were the words spoken by one of my male students upon departure from the White House Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony. He continued, "You know. . . I just figured I'd live in S.E. for 18 years, graduate and leave. I never thought I'd actually visit the White House . . .even though it's in DC."

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/SyBfaTHe-3I/AAAAAAAAAJU/H159v3NybHQ/s320/ANA!+030.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413431657512237938" />

Since becoming an official educator in August, I have had the privilege of taking two groups of students to the U.S. Capital for the traditional tour. Most of them 17 or 18 years of age, a majority of my students admitted that they had never been to the U.S. Capitol, some expressing the fact that they'd never been downtown. Holding back the tears, I remember pouring tears as a 5th grader because my mother could not afford to pay for me to attend the school's annual trip to Washington, D.C. I also remember not being selected as a page for the Arkansas State Capitol and trying to figure out why my teacher felt that I was not worthy of serving in the position.

Things make a lot more since now. And now that I'm teaching at Ana, I truly realize just how blessed I am. Twelve years have passed and I stand before roughly 35 Southeast D.C. seniors and juniors in sheer amazement. When I asked the students how many of them had visited the U.S. Capitol, only 6 raised their hands. When asked about the White House, only 2 hands waved in the air. While the Capitol lies 3 miles from ASHS and the White House only 3.5 miles away, in the eyes of my students, both locations are a world away.

So when individuals ask me why I love the Obamas, I say "I love the Obamas because they have made the impossible possible." While we oftentimes find ourselves arguing about any and every negative aspect of our country's government and current administration, it is important that we also focus on the positives. Because of the Obama administration, four of my students have visited and interviewed in a house they believed they would never see - let alone step foot into. You see, 3.5 miles was a world away until now.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/SyBfPjg3S7I/AAAAAAAAAJM/RSwxJI16N-U/s320/ANA!+031.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413431472935095218" />

For some odd reason I have always enjoyed politics and government. As an 8th grader, I stated that civics was my favorite subject because "I enjoy learning about how the government works" and look at me now, I'm teaching my favorite subjects to America's youth. Blessed BeYonD BeLieF. That's how I sum up my life now. I get paid to do what I love and I truly love what I do.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/SyBflnhRTJI/AAAAAAAAAJc/6Udpx5EWG00/s320/ANA!+100.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413431851967663250" />

Serena Williams: Still a Role Model

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 206px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/SyBsG2wLOEI/AAAAAAAAAJk/vC0wvD5ZClw/s320/S.+Williams2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413445617131927618" />

As a tennis player and avid fan of the Williams sisters, it’s been difficult to watch Serena come under fire for losing her cool during this year’s U.S. Open.

The 27-year-old threatened a line judge on Sept. 12 after being penalized for a foot fault that allowed her opponent to win the match. Not just any match— a semifinals match, a step away from the championship.

Serena was fined $10,5000 for behaving with “unsportsmanlike conduct” and for breaking her tennis racket during the match against Kim Clijsters, who won 6-4, 7-5. The incident is still under investigation, according to the International Tennis Federation.

Serena’s actions have been compared to male athletes and politicians like Congressman Joe Wilson (R-SC) who shouted, ‘You lie’ to President Barack Obama during his address to Congress earlier this month. In my eyes, there is no comparison, especially since Wilson disrespected the president and our country. Although Serena was wrong for what she said, does she really deserve all the criticism? Serena is a role model who’s made several contributions on behalf of youth and women during her tenure as a tennis star.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 210px; height: 162px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/SyBsLtxTPmI/AAAAAAAAAJs/bYFGW4PN6Pk/s320/S.+Williams4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413445700620074594" />

Some reporters and commentators have argued that Serena is being treated differently from male tennis athletes like John McEnroe and Roger Federer, who’ve been known to have an outburst or two on the court. Serena is being treated differently because she is a woman, and some say she should have acted like one during that match while others say Serena has received an extreme amount of criticism for an incident that has been blown way out of proportion.

Tennis is an intense, competitive sport; ask ANYONE who’s ever played. It’s frustrating to lose a semifinal grand slam match over a foot fault. And sadly, it was later announced that the foot fault was a bad call. Yes, what she did and said was wrong, but I would hope that all who have criticized Serena will accept her apology and recognize that all players, male or female, get upset over bad calls. She made a mistake, apologized, and should be forgiven.

As black women, it’s important for us to have role models like Serena portrayed in a positive light. So let’s get back to all that she’s accomplished. Serena created a school in Matooni, Kenya, has received awards for her work with breast cancer awareness, and also works with at-risk youth as well as Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. She’s a winner of several grand slam singles and doubles titles, and she consistently gives back to the community, sharing her integrity and dedication with the world. She is amazing – period.

"You Lie!" . . . America, we must do better! If we really want to progress, we must first admit to our problems and move from there. Until we can admit that there is a race issue in this country, progress will be but a hope in the wind.

Congressman Joe Wilson [R-SC] disrupted a President during his speech (and he said it twice!), apologized to the Chief-of-Staff, and then proceeded by refusing to apologize to Congress. As a native Southerner, this sadly does not surprise me. I mean, he was mentored by Strom Thurmond, what do you expect from him?!?!?

This is so disappointing to me because I honestly don't think he's apologetic at all and if he had the opportunity, he'd say it again. Come on now, just the other day the man was autographing photos of the his horrific act! What does this say about our country? About being patriotic to our President?

Progress - tell me what it means to you.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://youngandblackinamerica.blogspot.com/2009/09/you-lie-are-you-serious.html' title='"You Lie!" . . . A new teacher with a new face. Lots of energy - how long will she last? Excited now - but what about next semester, next month. . . next week for that matter?

These are only a few of the thoughts running through my mind but at the end of each though, I shrug my shoulders and come to the realization that I know I'm going to do my very best to stay true to myself, my beliefs, and my values. That alone will lead me to success.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 158px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/Soyb2-mKlKI/AAAAAAAAAIk/OnYWPzjmGgk/s200/ASHSb.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371839824364475554" />

Despite the rude and erroneous comments that several people have made pertaining to the school, community, and the district, I am so happy to be here. It's where I wanted to be and where I am dedicated to making a difference in the lives of the students who attend school here. Many great people have walked through the ASHS doors and on Monday, many more will do the same.

Today is a new day and with new days come new adventures. Too many American children have been denied their shot at the 'American Dream' for way too long and now, not tomorrow, is the time to start make the changes necessary to combat this evil. You see, great teachers aren't created - they're born great.

ASHS - Go Indians!!!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/Soyb2obW3lI/AAAAAAAAAIc/dCKcZspUOBs/s200/ASHSc.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371839818413563474" />

Lil' Wayne and Dem Franchize Boyz' "Whip it Like a Slave"

Words can not begin to describe how disgusted and disappointed I am about this piece of 'work'. A man considered by many to be one of the greatest rap/hip-hop artists ever, has definitely stirred up the African-American and American community with his song "Whip it Like a Slave". Not to mention that this is an absolutely horrible way for Dem Franchize Boyz to return to the musical scene.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/Snj2Xbhy86I/AAAAAAAAAIE/drIGzNRuPxA/s200/lil+wayne.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5366309838398878626" />Why? That is definitely my primary question. Being that the members of the group and Lil'Wayne himself all derive from states categorized as members of the 'Deep South', one would think that their knowledge of the history of Africans in America would be a little more dense and thus considerate but unfortunately for them, this piece clearly displays their ignorance and inability to create substantial pieces worth listening to or purchasing.

Today was such a great day until I heard news of this 'mess'. President Obama turned 48 years young today and I learned that I would be teaching US History and US Government (my preferred courses) at the ideal high school for me. I purchased two books from the bookstore to add to my classroom library with hopes of giving my 11th and 12th grade students the opportunity to learn more about their history. The school is 99.9% African-American and the books I purchased focused on the lives of African-Americans.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 149px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/Snj2XIPov5I/AAAAAAAAAH8/VDcKoOm4UaE/s200/dfb.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5366309833222438802" />I walked home super excited about the great news only to find out around 9pm that the infamous New Orleans bred Wayne had done the unthinkable. Never in my lifetime did I think I would hear such horrible news. It was like hearing that someone had passed away. How horrible and disappointed it is to know that the many known to many as a mastermind rapper would create such a disgusting piece of 'art'.

It is clear that I am upset and so I will do what I tell my students to do when they don't like something - change it.

Cambridge 101: Racism + Classism = Arrest

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/SnjxIQ5-oVI/AAAAAAAAAHk/FZ6lbbBMRgM/s200/Gates+Crowley.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5366304080291340626" />
On November 4, 2009, the entire state of Massachusetts was blue. Every district voted in favor of soon-to-be President Obama and thus it could be said that the state was pretty much 'liberal' and supposedly non-racist. In addition, MA was one of the first states to legalize gay marriage.

Nonetheless, all this aside, the city of Cambridge has been at the forefront of many news headliners lately due to the arrest of Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Although the entire situation was and continues to be a complete mess, there is one topic that few, if any reports, has touched upon - classism.

Considering the fact that Professor Gates (whom I had the pleasure of working for last summer in the DuBois Institute) will probably make more money on his next book/film than Officer Crowley will make in the 2009 fiscal year, it is no wonder that he would become angry when an intelligent African-American man questioned him about his authority and responsibilities as an officer.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 120px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/SnjxItUeVaI/AAAAAAAAAHs/KVUCnXmtwLw/s200/Professor+Gates.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5366304087918663074" />
Many veteran officers in and outside of Massachusetts have reported that they wouldn't have arrested Gates and that Crowley overstepped his boundaries. It has also surfaced that Crowley lied in the police report he submitted stating that he was given the race of the man 'forcing entry' into the home, when, in fact, he wasn't.

So once again, I re-iterate that while this story has much to do with race (regardless of what people think), class plays an enormous role also. Interestingly enough, many are not aware of the fact that Professor Gates' wife of nearly 30 years (or more) is white and they have two daughters together. But, of course, the media never mentioned that. . .only that Professor Gates was racist for choosing the Jamaican brand beer for the 'beer summit'. And as a point of clarification, he actually had a Sam Adams light, lol.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 127px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/SnjxI2_DDXI/AAAAAAAAAH0/fGa5R2bs0F8/s200/Beer+summit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5366304090513149298" />
This city is home to some of the wealthiest Americans and therefore the local public high school (only one in the city) has a per pupil spending of over 25,000 per student. Compare that to the $2,500 that some schools in Arkansas receive and you'll get the point. However, one might find it quite remarkable that MA and Cambridge are very segregated and that the high school, because of its diverse and growing population (due, in part, to Cambridge's status as a sanctuary city) has been the target of many white, wealth residents in Cambridge who refused to support the school if the new Superintendent wasn't the person they chose. I won't go into detail but if you think there's no racism in Cambridge, look into the Superintendent situation and you'll definitely change your mind. Talk about a chaotic situation.

In the end, it is important for those of you who are not from MA and have never visited Cambridge to know that the city has a lot of issues surrounding race and class that are rarely, if ever, pursued by the media. If you don't know anything about Cambridge, please refrain from making blanket statements about the incidents that occur here for you honestly have no idea how complex this place really is.

Wimbledon 2009: All Williams FiNaL!!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 138px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/Sk5jJ8g7itI/AAAAAAAAAHU/RmCQlwwLcj0/s200/VandS.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5354326029504318162" />

So they have done it yet again, Venus and Serena have successfully played their way to the finals of the 2009 All England Club tourney. Don't miss the action tomorrow on NBC. This special occasion will mark Venus and Serena's fourth time playing one another in a Grand Slam final. If Venus wins tomorrow, it will be her 6th Wimbledon championship and for Serena, it would be her third. Although I'm a huge fan of Serena, I'd love to see either win and am very excited to see both in the finals!! For a number of these exceptionally talented ladies, they are the first African-Americans to do so. Here's a snapshot of what was covered. Feel free to google and youtube these lovely ladies in learning more about their backgrounds, accomplishments, and current positions.

Melodie Barnes: Now why would he do such a thing, you ask? Well after reviewing film, it looks as though House actually swung an elbow before the slap came along. Nonetheless, there was a double technical called and Alston will not be playing tomorrow. So. . . with Nelson, Lee, and Alston out, it looks like the C's can snatch Game 3 up if they play similar to the way they did last night.

For an even bigger laugh, check out House's comments on the incident, lol, wow. . .http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unTiQ0D3tfA

Michaelle Jean: Canada's First Black Governor General

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 153px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/SdgcfjBowTI/AAAAAAAAAFU/0upM1EyUjag/s200/Jean.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5321034288041869618" />
During her first meeting with newly inaugurated US President, Barack Obama, Michaelle Jean, Governor of Canada, gladly excepted the President's request that they keep in touch after talking about the economy and social challenges, especially those impacting the people of Haiti, where Jean is from. She and her husband, Canadian filmmaker Jean-Daniel Lafond, adopted their daughter from Haiti.

Jean was born in Haiti in 1957. In 1968, she and her family fled the island to escape the regime of dictator Francois Duvalier who tortured Jean’s father and kept him from his family for more than 30 years. When Jean’s family arrived in Canada, they made their home in Quebec.

Jean, 51, is a woman with an extensive educational background. These are only a few of the feelings that came over me while listening to Dr. Harris-Lacewell as she expressed so gracefully the significance of looking beyond the surface when attempting to analyze the events of Hurricane Katrina and the image of Black women widely seen in today's media.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 133px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/Sda0XsNkPSI/AAAAAAAAAE0/I7PKca8Afgo/s400/MHL.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5320638328882871586" />

A bi-racial woman, I have never met a woman like Dr. Harris-Lacewell, a woman who speaks from the heart while making sure that her facts are right (except for that one little date. . .lol, jk). Articulate to the T, Dr. Harris-Lacewell embodies many of the characteristics that I too embody.

I am so happy to have a new role model to add to the bunch! I was very confused about whether or not I wanted to make an attempt at obtaining a PhD in the future and Dr. Harris-Lacewell's presentations very much helped me decide what I would like to accomplish in the future.

So yeah, I definitely think you should check her out on youtube or via her website http://www.melissaharrislacewell.com or visit her blog at http://princetonprofs.blogspot.com/.

March Madness - My Favorite Time of the Year!

Okay, so Oklahoma just defeated Michigan to advanced to the Sweet 16 and I must say, I absolutely love March Madness. I'm in New England freezing in March but nothing makes me more happy than being able to watch basketball 24 hours a day. Sorry football fans but basketball is by far one of the greatest sports ever created (thanks to Mr. Naismith).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 193px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/ScWDmFht8HI/AAAAAAAAAD0/-sKkaZFrJKI/s200/naismith.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5315799625522606194" />
So yeah, it's day three and a couple of teams have really banged up my bracket (cough, cough Illinois, Wake, FSU, UCLA, WVU, and the list goes on lol) but nonetheless I've always been the one to get teary eyed over seeing the underdog prevail (Davidson in 2008). Watching Stephan Curry play during the day and the results of the Democratic primaries at night. . . ahhhh the joy - politics and basketball, my two loves!!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 188px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/ScWD65yHIAI/AAAAAAAAAD8/sua38xDL3w8/s200/obama+ball.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5315799983147393026" />
And it looks like this year will bring a little bit of the same. I wonder if the 12/13 match-up between Arizona and Cleveland St. is a first? I'm sure the commentator will give us that info during the first 2 minutes of the game, lol. . . they always seem to know everything that's ever happened with each of the teams.

Okay so clearly I'm just excited that this time is here again and thus wanted to blog about it while I await the start of the Duke/Texas game. . . one that almost everyone believes Duke will lose. Black History Month is Still Relevant and Necessary. . .

As this topic arises more throughout the month, I find myself wondering why 'people' assume that just because we have an African and American (hope you caught that) President, Black History Month (along with racism, affirmative action, and discrimination against Blacks) all of a sudden become irrelevant?

I personally believe that President and First Lady Obama would certainly agree with me that Black History is something that everyone in American should become more knowledgable of. In fact, I hope that people will now find it important to teach the history of African-Americans more in America's schools seeing as it has been almost invisible within nearly all school's curriculum in the past and surely the present.

Knowing how this country developed and the significance of those who suffered during the creation of 'America' is very important to anyone who thinks that they can successfully accomplish the promises of this land's constitution.

Because the United States of America has always been plagued with racism, discrimination, hatred, etc., accepting the fact that they all still exist is the first step in overcoming the negative impacts that these practices have on our daily lives. Ignoring them will not get us anywhere. Because for several years, many of us have tried to simply ignore the fact that these practices exist and thus we are still confused and in awe about such incidents as police brutality, high crime and murder rates, high teenage pregnancy rates, high STD rates, etc.

Knowing the history of this country and recognizing the underlying significance of the quote "What goes around, Comes around" will aid in creating a better understanding why Barack Obama's inauguration and Oscar Grants murder occurred in the same month. You see, change is a coming but it's going to take all of us working together to accomplish the inevitable.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://youngandblackinamerica.blogspot.com/2009/02/yes-black-history-month-is-still.html' title='Yes. Oklahoma.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/SWkOh0Rhg5I/AAAAAAAAADU/hnppjgoUpVw/s200/Ron.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5289775211453973394" />

I question whether or not the media celebrating this 'achievement' helps or hinder America as the worlds knows it? Seeing as it took x amount of years for this to occur, I would not think this would help because I am sure (as many others are also) there was an African-American available last year, the year before, etc.

If I were the media (commentators included) I would not have made an announcement about this unless Mr. Cherry himself agreed that it was okay. As he does his job the same way he's done it for years, I am curious as to whether or not he feels this announcement belittles his ability to do his job at the same capacity as his white counterparts?

I personally believe that such actions as these taken by the American media makes our country look desparate in our hope that the world will think we have progressed when in all actuality, we have made little progress considering where we should be. To support my point, I will add that the first black ref to work a Super Bowl game was Mike Carey and that was just last year.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 134px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/SWkOw7idyjI/AAAAAAAAADc/h0JCkL0C4Nw/s200/Mike.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5289775471102118450" />

This is not to say that things are not 'better' but how long are we going to say the same ole quote, "we have a long way to go." I lost my second cousin this past week to policy brutality within the small, rural Arkansan town of Morrilton, Arkansas. Jermell was only 19. Shot 9 times by police officers who claim they felt their lives were endangered, Jermell had no weapon on him.

Just 3 years ago, my cousin Jerome was killed in the town's jail after he was arrested for 'whipping his girlfriend's son'. Last year, our family was 'rewarded' a sum of money that did not even cover lawyer fees and the cost of the funeral. No officers were suspended or fired during this case. One officer took an extended 'emergency' leave from work immediately after Jerome was pronounced dead. Ironically, the town experience a very rare tornado during this entire ordeal and in the midst of it, the primary officer involved saw his house nearly destroyed by tornado.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 138px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/STs_AT6f8PI/AAAAAAAAAC8/s0jx1xXOTXw/s200/PB2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5276880662972854514" />

Morrilton, Arkansas is the town with 6,650 citizens, 78.38% White, 17.47% Black or African American, and 3.37% Latino, and maybe 1 or 2 minority members of the police force. In the 18+ years that I spent in Conway County, I can only remember there being one female officer and one African-American male officer. Sadly, Jerome and Jermell's deaths were not the first and second in the towns history as there have been a few incidents that occurred in the past.

I present all of this to say, when - if ever - will police brutality end? When will we, as minorities, no longer worry about being pulled over because we were driving while Black, followed in stores, denied a taxi, discriminated in restaurants, stereotyped by the media and the world, presumed to be incapable by teachers and professors, denied the right to learn about our ancestors in history class, held down by glass ceilings, etc.? No, I didn't look these up on the web, I have experienced them all myself.

When will my family and all of the families effected by police brutality see justice in this country that we are supposed to love yet have been excluded from for so long? Time will only tell and until then we must work to ensure that all of our loved one who have been killed are one day able to actually rest in piece.

Never forget.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 160px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/STs_E-tvAlI/AAAAAAAAADE/tklHpuixpvI/s200/PB.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5276880743181517394" />

Michelle Obama: A Great Role Model for Young Black Girls

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 154px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/SSWcBqnWJfI/AAAAAAAAAC0/vMGcaPFU0QE/s200/Michelle2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5270790491340154354" />

On the evening of Tuesday November 4, 2008, Michelle Robinson Obama became the first African American to be named the nation’s First Lady. And although accepting this title may be one of the most amazing things to happen to her in her lifetime, she has a lot to be proud of, as she is an amazingly intelligent woman who has accomplished a lot over her lifetime. Born and raised in South side Chicago, Michelle faced a lot of the same challenges that young Black girls face today. She is a role model because she has overcome many battles to graduate from Princeton University, and Ivy League school in New Jersey, and Harvard Law School.

Currently studying within the Harvard Graduate School of Education, I think about Michelle her experience here at Harvard every time I walk by the Law School. I think about the battles she overcame, the judgment she faced, and the stereotypes she combated as a Black women studying to become a lawyer (a very male-dominated career) within the best institution in the world. I think about her fears and her triumphs and it is at that point that I realize, I have no reason to doubt myself because I know that if she did, I can to.

Michelle Obama is paving a new road for Black women, young and older. She is an inspirational and motivation individual, creating a new style of leadership and power. As Black women, we should definitely utilize her life as a means of overcoming great battles to succeed in anything we wish to!

Transition to Power: Obamas Visit White House

Well, well! For many Americans, the racial tension that exist in the Deep South are unknown and rarely experienced. As for the people of color still residing there, the racial tensions are but an extension of our country's dark past.

Born and raised in rural Arkansas, I was overwhelmingly filled with joy at the fact that the son of a Kenyon man and a white woman born in Kansas has become the 44th president of the US.

But because I am a political junkie a.k.a. former Capitol Hill inter, Political Science major, and currently a Social Studies teacher, I have studied the voter turn out immensely over the past week and am saddened by the fact that many people in the South are not likely to ever change their views of members of other racial or ethnic groups.

Yes, it is true that many Southerners voted based upon their moral and/or religious views which happened to match up better with Senator McCain's views. It is also true that many Southerners are quite wealthy and therefore voted for McCain because they did not want to see their taxes go up. But just as these two scenarios are true, it is also true that many Southerners did not vote for President-elect Obama simply because he is a person of color, bi-racial, Black, etc.

My hope is that over the next four or even eight years, people are drawn to the truth behind great leadership. If people in this country call themselves Americans who truly love their country, they will stick behind the decision of the country to vote President-elect Obama and help create a society that lives up to its founding documents.

Michelle Obama is AMAZING!!

After watching yet another exceptional interview with the lovely Michelle Obama this past Wednesday on Larry King Live, I am reminded why I am so blessed and so happy to be a Black woman in America.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/SO_uOiHda2I/AAAAAAAAAB8/rje5uVWDVaA/s200/Michelle3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5255681223608331106" />

In addition to her wonderful personality, Michelle is very straightforward and that is why I respect her so much. He went on to explain that if Barack Obama wins it will be because white individuals who are voting for him are doing so out of pity or simply because they do not like John McCain.

I began wondering if his statement had any truth? As we are all aware, African-American's votes will take their toll on the election but I find myself wondering if the impact will be heavy if some eligible African-Americans do not vote after all. Registering is one thing but actually going the polls is another.

Furthermore there are many myths surrounding whether or not individuals with criminal records can vote. It has come to my attention that in some state, ex-felons are allowed to vote if they are no longer on parole. This is a factor holding many African-Americans back from visiting the polls. Hopefully we will work together at citizens of this country to make sure that each and every individual practices their right to vote as citizens.

It is so crucial that we remember the fight that some many before us fought in order for us to vote. I asked my 9th and 11th grade students if they believed they should be able to vote at the age of 16 and many of them had never even considered the option. It is quite interesting to me, a 22 year-old, that 16 year-olds are allowed to work (some 15 year-olds are allowed to work with permission from the state), pay taxes, and take courses on Civics, Economics, Government, ect. and therefore are at least somewhat familiar with the current state of government, politics, economics, and other societal situations yet aren't allowed to vote.

This conversation definitely went a little off the beam but nonetheless I thought it necessary to give light to an issue that many leave in the dark to some extent.

Sarah Palin and Foreign Policy. . . . For the past week, we've been flooded with information about her but for some odd reason, I am still at a loss for words. I am not here to bash Palin or suggest, in any way, that she is not a good person with a great heart and good intentions for the country. I'm sure that all of these traits coincide with her believes yet her inexperience are very questionable in suggesting that she could handle the tough situations that our country will encounter within the upcoming years.

I spent the first four months of this year in the Dirksen Sentate building in DC which gave me an opportunity to work with one of the 16 female senators who partake in the day to day congressional work of the US. During my time there, I was able to see many Republican women at work including Olympia Snowe, a seasoned senator from Maine, Elizabeth Dole, the wife of Bob Dole, and Condoleeza Rice, the current Secretary of State. I was also able to see Mary Kay Hutchinson, a house mom to senator, from Texas. Furthermore, if McCain thinks he will scoop up even 50% of Hillary fans, he is wrong. Women are not silly and it's harder than he thinks to get Democratic women to switch parties during this time of crisis.

The issue of women aside, it makes absolutely NO sense to me that McCain would choose Palin as his VP. He'd known her for all of 5 days (realistically) and therefore did not (and most likely still does not) know many of the essential details that a President should know about their VP.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/SO_vKv68XsI/AAAAAAAAACE/jYERc9D6MzA/s200/Palin.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5255682258106080962" />

Furthermore, she is far removed from the issues that are plaguing the 48 connected states of the US. For those who are unaware, Alaska is not simply 'above Washington'. Alaska has only 683,473 people total, making it 11 times smaller than New York City alone. It is the largest state in the country but is ranked 47th by means of population ahead of only North Dakota and Vermont. So my question is, how will Palin discuss situations occurring in Detroit, Miami, and Memphis where the crime rate is increasing by the year.

With nearly 70% of the population being White and another 15% being Native American (you see where Manifest Destiny left some of them), it is also a wonder how she will relate closely to Latino/a, African-American, Asian, African, Caribbean, etc. issues when she has rarely, if ever, been exposed to individuals from those groups.

She lied about selling the jet on ebay (it was sold to someone after it didn't sale on ebay) and lied about selling it for a profit when in all actuality is sold for .4 million less. She also is under investigation which totally blows my mind because she may end up in court! What then will the Republican party do?

These are VERY important issues to discuss because in all reality, Palin may very well be our next VP. Former Michigan Governor Mitt Romney, former Arkansan Governer Mike Huckabee, Connecticut's Independent (once Democrat) Senator Joe Liberman, and many others to include Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano would have been remarkable choices and all of these Republican commentators know it!

I don't know about you but I am very scared for our country. I McCain wins, we are going to not only worry about our country's economic issues, we will also have to worry about its leadership for another 4, maybe 8 years. That in itself is very disturbing.

In conclusion, I simply ask "is Palin ready?" and my answer is no. She may have 20 months of executive experience but keep in mind that she has 20 months of executive experience in a state where the capital, Juneau, is 1,400 miles from Seattle, Washington. Who knows how many times she's been to the conjoined states? Has she visited your state? Does she know your struggles as a mother, father, minority or struggling student? Will she be there for you during your time of pain, to understand and reassure hope?

Replies are greatly appreciated!

Sports: politics, publicity, and professionalism

So, it has come to my attention, lol, that women are stereotypically not knowledgable about the world of sports. Well, I'm not one of those women and I must say that I actually know many women who know lots about sports (both male and female sports) and many men who know little about the interest. Furthermore, there's nothing wrong with either gender not knowing every little thing about sports. . . I mean, this is a free country, lol, and every one's entitled to having their own interests.

Since I was eight, I remember watching my uncle coach those long legged boys through multiple winning basketball seasons. I did not understand then why the people around me were so happy when that round, brown ball went into the right circle but I loved it. From that point on, I found myself cheering on my twin sister while she played and later cheering on my younger sister through her years as a hoopster. I gave up basketball for cheerleading a couple weeks into our 7th grade season. I mean, I was not great but I was not bad either - it just was not the sport for me.

No matter the time of year; summer, fall, spring, or winter, I loved watching basketball. And since Arkansas did not and still does not have a professional team, I learned to love the fact that I could cheer on any NBA team in the country without feeling bad. Now choosing a NCAA team was different. I honestly was not a big fan of the Razorbacks early on because they always seemed a world away from where and how I was raised. I did not know about that part of the state until I travelled there as a sophomore in high school for a leadership conference and to be honest, I did not like what I saw. So, early on, I was a huge fan of Duke. I mean, I cheered them on back when Duhon, Dunleavey, Battier, and Boozer were freshman! (I'm sure this is not long ago for many but for me, I was pretty young, lol). I loved the Blue Devils and Coach K was awesome in my eyes.

Today, however, I have become more interested in studying the politics behind the sports world, the leaders of the field, and the individuals who are responsible for creating admirable lifestyles for many of the players who do not realize the significance of gaining an education that you will have before and after the league if you choose to stay in college for four years. I wish I could tell them the same thing I tell my young cousins, the NBA/NFL/MLB will always be there but the opportunity for you gain knowledge of financial stability through personal growth and understanding may be more difficult without a plausible education. I love attending NBA and Collegiate basketball games but find myself focusing on things outside of the actually game that tend to bother me so much. And after learning that Kevin Garnett WANTED to go to college but could not attend due to his standardized test scores, I knew that my feelings were not in vain.

When athletes are interviewed after a game and their communication skills are poor, I ask myself why they did not gain those simple skills in high school and furthermore, why their managers, publicists, and coaches (who all seemingly have college degrees) are not providing them with the tools to present themselves as the professionals they are.

An advocate for the African-American community, I have NO problem with the tone or diction for which these men and women partake in using during their interviews. What I do have a problem with is the fact that tax payers (which include the parents and/or guardians of these athletes) pay hard earned money for their children to attend schools that we are all made to believe will prepare our youth for college or at least give them the skills to survive in society once they complete high school. But for some odd reason, I can digest a reason for which SOME (not all) of our American high school English teachers are not doing their job of teaching their students how to speak simple grammar.

Once again, I am not saying that 'proper' English is a must, I am simply wondering why children are forced to attend school (and correct me if I am wrong but EVERY NBA player from America graduated from high school. . . right)yet are coming home with only a third of the knowledge they need to succeed. And yes, studies have shown that students are graduating high school with 4th and 5th grade reading levels. Look it up - you'll be amazed, maybe not. For most African-American children growing up in American today, this is also true.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/SLuExnt2AHI/AAAAAAAAABg/G4VYJiOrVpc/s200/children.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5240928579385426034" />

For many of America's high school teachers and college professors of History do not take a single course in African and/or African-American History and therefore are leaving college with a degree in US or World History with little or no knowlege of Africans or African-Americans. Yet they are allowed to go into our schools and teach our children the 'history' of America.

For me, this is also true. Raised in rural Arkansas, I did not learn that the location of the Civil Rights Museum and site of MLK's assisination was only 2.5 hours away from my birth place until my freshman year of college. Embarrassed and angry, I knew that I had to do something to make up for my school district's wrongdoing. (You see, in my eyes, I felt that they had volated their job of teaching me US and World History which should have included information pertaining to African and African-Americans)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_e8a5agXz0VE/SLuExq8dDLI/AAAAAAAAABo/za_h3AcnER8/s200/children2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5240928580252011698" />

Since 2006, I have studied African and African-American History, study abroad in East Africa, and will soon be a certified high school history teacher. Accepted into Graduate School here at Harvard in March of this year, I have had the privilege of teaching AP US History this past summer and will teach US History II (1865-present) this fall and spring. No one made me choose this path but me. I saw a problem and have decided to fix it. I tell my story with hope that it will inspire others to not necessarity do the same yet possible engage in teaching our young brothers and sisters and cousins the importance of getting an education so that they will not have to depend on others for simple knowlege.

You know, an education can take you a long way but self-education will take you a long way and make you so much stronger than you ever imagined! Let me know what you think!

The Black Woman: Past to Present

In a country where women of African descent (i.e. those deriving from African nations and Caribbean islands) have been pigeonholed into several negative stereotypes for over 300 years, now is the time to discuss the issues that Black women face each day.

Known to those outside of the Black community as trifling, welfare prone, teenage mothers, and obtaining an angry attitude, Black women in America face many trials and tribulations each and everyday. A double minority, both Black and female, we are followed in stores and paid less than White women and both Black and White men all the while working the same jobs.

Often overlooked, Black women helped build America from scratch right off the slaves ships alongside their Black male counterparts. Even after Emancipation, Black women served as indentured servants and house maids which required them to spend much of their day away from their own children. They never had a 'break' or an opportunity to serve as a housewife and therefore it is no wonder that the role of the Black family has always been far from 'traditional'.

Black couples have inherited the lifestyles of their ancestors that require both individuals to work and has instilled in Black women the want to succeed and to do so independently if need be. Ironically, many within the American society feels that Emancipation and the Civil Rights Act alone paved the road that allowed Black women to now have the right to be a housewife is chosen to do so. Yet they fail to realize that by that time, Black women were well prepared to hold active positions within their lives and the lives of their family members.

When will we as a country and as a community began working together to combat the stereotypes that are placed on our Black women, men, youth, and families altogether? Now is the time and we can do it together.

Let me now how you feel - feedback and comments are a great means of learning.
